We study the multi-scale mechanisms of rock fracturing and flow through rock masses in the context of subsurface energy systems and civil engineering applications. To do so, we conduct experiments and develop predictive numerical models that elucidate how damage may be produced, monitored and controlled in rock and rock-like materials.
